What exactly is goat scaping and how does it work?

Goat scaping is a natural, chemical-free land clearing method where a herd of goats is brought to your property to graze on overgrown vegetation, invasive plants, and dense brush. The goats eat their way through problem areas over a set period of time, clearing land in a way that is gentle on the soil and completely free of herbicides or heavy machinery.

What types of plants will the goats eat?

Goats are effective at clearing a wide range of vegetation including invasive species like Buckthorn, which is a major problem across the Plymouth and West Metro area. They also consume overgrown brush, vines, thistle, and other dense undergrowth. They are particularly well-suited for areas with dense invasive growth that would be difficult or time-consuming to clear by hand or machine.

Will the goats damage my lawn or surrounding landscape?

Goat scaping is a low-impact method specifically because it avoids the soil disruption and surface damage that heavy equipment causes. The goats graze selectively and their hooves do far less damage to the ground than tracked or wheeled machinery. Gearin's team manages the herd throughout the process to keep them focused on the target area and away from plants or features you want to preserve.

How long does a goat scaping project take?

Timeline depends on the size of the area and the density of the vegetation. Some properties are cleared in a few days while others with heavier growth may take a week or more. Gearin assesses your property and gives you a realistic timeframe based on what your site actually requires before the goats arrive.

Is goat scaping more affordable than traditional land clearing?

For the right type of project, yes. Goat scaping eliminates the cost of herbicide applications and reduces the need for heavy equipment on properties with dense invasive vegetation. It is not the fastest option for every job, but for properties battling Buckthorn or large areas of overgrowth where chemical-free clearing is a priority, it is a cost-effective and environmentally sound alternative. Gearin can help you evaluate whether goat scaping or traditional land clearing is the better fit for your specific situation.
